A Collection of Classic Dr Who Cut-outs

The past few weeks I've been trying out some new techniques in Photoshop to create original art - specifically figures of various monsters and aliens from 20th century Doctor Who. I've done loads of them - probably around forty. They all need to re-formatted for the blog which I plan to do over the weekend. In the mean time, here are some cut-out sheets based on them. 

These are larger jpegs than I would normally post and don't contain watermarks. Feel free to download them and print them out - preferably onto either cartridge paper or card depending how strong your printer is feeling today! Although they are A4 sized, they should print at A3 size without too much loss of quality. Kids will probably enjoy them but I just did them for fun and in homage to the old Weetabix cards of the 70s. 

Someone suggested I print them as postcard packs. We'll see. 

And remember if you are using scissors, get a child to help you.

Just Some Timeslip Merchandise...

Despite my love of the early 70s sci-fi serial Timeslip, I've done very few designs based on the show... 'til now. 

This is a selection of stuff I did over a week when I needed a distraction from reality.

A Selection of Vintage Threads Merchandise

It can't have gone unnoticed that I have a thing about merchandise based on the 80s BBC drama Threads. One of my earliest posts was for a Panini Threads Sticker Book. I've gone back and re-done that one now I know how Photoshop actually works. And also done a couple of other pieces of apocalyptic ephemera... 

(Oh and by the way, I don't have any swapsies of "Woman Pissing Herself".)

The EastEnders Beetabix Promotion - Free Figures In Every Pack!!!

One of the most popular Doctor Who commercial promotions of the 70s was run by Weetabix when they offered free cardboard figures of the Doctor and his friends in every packet. 

It was so popular, they did it twice with the TV Time Lord and ran similar promotions with Disney characters, Asterix and one for Star Trek The Motion Picture. 

Here's something I knocked up based on the second Doctor Who promotion. Each box of Weetabix contained four figures - three 'monster' cards and a "Secret Message From Time Lords" (sic). The monster cards could be slotted into one of four game boards that adorned the back of each pack and became forfeits for landing on specific squares during game play. 

My little effort follows the same format but with modern EastEnders characters instead... Playing the game makes an exciting alternative to having to watch the series at the moment...

You could also try to decode the secret messages from Mr. Papadopoulos... if you really want.

The UFO one made a very good friend of mine laugh quite a lot. ("It's funny cuz that's her name!")

Dr Who and the Three Breakfast Cereals

One of my earliest discoveries was the sad tale of Kellogg's Porky Pops - an attempt by the US food giant to create a savoury breakfast cereal back in the 1960s. As much I know about it is located in an old blog post here.

During the past few days, I've uncovered further breakfast wanderings into the worlds of Doctor Who - one of which appears to be a further failed attempt to re-launch the savoury brand. 

They are presented here without further comment...

What's this thing for badly drawn Jon Pertwees on advertising stuff?

Jon Pertwee's face appeared on quite a few products during his tenure as the Doctor.

 Some - like the one on the left - are quite disturbing. 

One wonders what the marketing bods back then thought when they gave the go ahead for this artwork for Kellogg's Sugar Smacks... 

Disturbing.

Pertwee also appeared on a recipe book for the Co-op - everyone's favourite local supermarket. I've not seen a complete copy since the 70s but images of the grinning actor extolling the virtues of good food abound on the internet. 

And, whilst it's a more jovial improvement on the 'bogey man' Sugar Smacks artwork, it's still not exactly a Frank Bellamy Radio Times cover is it?

Another Great Merchandising Failure of the 20th Century

Nolly Flakes - Rose & Lemon Flavour

It seems the contents of this late 60s breakfast cereal were imported from Turkey. No one at the UK manufacturer's office was able to speak or read the Turkish labels on the base product before it was repackaged with Noele Gordon's face on it. 

It was only when a Turkish speaking sales rep from another company spotted one of the labels that they discovered that they were actually selling cheap pot pourri. 

At least consumers breath smelt nice at the start of the day...
