Here's season twenty-one. I remember enjoying this season. A vast improvement on the previous two and Peter seemed to be getting into his stride. Sadly, the writing was on the wall. Dreadful irony that his final story proved to be one of the greatest Doctor Who adventures of all time...

(BTW - the change of style for the final story of season 21 is a deliberate artistic decision that is sadly not followed up with the following season.)

Doctor Who Season Twenty - on Target

Let's be honest, season twenty of Doctor Who was a bit of a mess at the time. Allegedly each story featured an element from the Doctor's past only after it was pointed out to the producer late into production causing much confusion for the eager fan. And these past elements were only bolstered by the fact that the Black Guardian featured in half of them... Although not as bland as the previous season, this one does at least have a bit of colour with the return of The Brigadier, a sequel to Kinda, sailing ships in space and a trip to Amsterdam. 'The Five Doctors' always gets bolted onto the end - mostly for convenience as it fills the gap left by a four-part story featuring the Daleks that was abandoned due to a strike. I have also made such a move... 

To attempt to be different, I thought it would be fun NOT to include any of the Doctors on the novelisation of the anniversary story. To be honest, there is so much in The Five Doctors worthy of the cover besides them, it would end up cluttered... as many fan pieces bear witness to. Keep it simple and to the point was the advice of my lecturer at university... It still looks a bit cluttered but it does at least solve the problem of putting a prominent Tom Baker in the design.

Proper Target-style Covers For Those Two Eric Saward Dalek Novels...

I think it's safe to say that the covers for Eric Saward's novelisations of his two classic Doctor Who serials have not exactly been popular with their potential market. 

I had avoided doing some alternative covers for them as there are some very good ones on the net already. But since I had the templates out and I'd had loads of requests (well, two anyway!) to do some, I knocked these up over an evening last week. 

They are done in the style of Target books from around the period that the original stories were transmitted in the mid-eighties.

The Complete Doctor Who Season 19 Box Set... on VHS!

It's only a few months until the nineteenth season of Doctor Who makes its debut on shiny new Blu ray discs. 

Here's a version for the more budget conscious fan with too much spare shelf space... and a yearning for 80s tech nostalgia.

Timelord Special - 100% Unofficial and Independent!!!

There's a publication out there - on the streets of Britain. A magazine apparently a souvenir of the BBCtv series Doctor Who. But it's cover suggests that it's 100% independent and unofficial - which kind of rules out the official Doctor Who magazine. 

Needless to say the care taken with it's production is evidently clear on its cover which features a carefully crafted montage of all of the Doctors - including Richard Hurndall taking his rightful place as the first Doctor.

I've yet to see the actual magazine in question - other than a photo of its cover gleaned from the Instagram account of a fellow Dr Who fan who goes by the unlikely name of Russell T Davies (!). 

For that reason, I've delved into my grimey subconscious and imagined its horrifying contents...

The Doctor Who Quiz Books Of...

There were a series of largely educational quiz books published back in the early 80s. Written by Michael Holt, they featured the fifth Dr WHO and his assistants facing perplexing problems based around such themes as 'Space', 'Dinosaurs' and 'Magic'. Most of them ended up in remainded book shops as we Dr WHO fans didn't buy them much. 

Here's some modern versions that are themed around more relevant 21st century subjects...

MYRKA! The Deadly Undersea Monster from BBCtv's Dr Who!!

The Myrka was one of the most memorable monsters to appear in 1980s Doctor Who. FACT.  

Those who witnessed its attack on a wobbly bulkhead door in the fifth Doctor tale 'Warriors of the Deep' cannot wipe it from their memory despite extensive therapy. 

And the sight of Hammer legend Ingrid Pitt attempting to floor the terrifying creature with a Kung Fu move straight out of the choreography for West Side Story is still burnt on the retina of many youngsters who were traumatised at the time. 

For these reasons a toy based on the pantomime lizard was never released...

Doctor Who Ice Lollies - Direct from 1982!

With the weather improving and spring finally taking root, thoughts turn to ice cream and the wonderful range of ice lollies available for Doctor Who fans of all ages - especially those growing up in the 1980s...

A Doctor Who Easter Egg for the 21st Century!

Fans of a certain age will recall a certain Doctor Who Easter egg produced by Suchard back in the early 80s that featured both a Dalek and the fifth Doctor. The box was in the shape of the TARDIS and the Dalek was depicted on the front firing its gun stick. If you opened the TARDIS door, then a grinning Peter Davison was revealed looking very pleased with himself. 

Fans with dirty minds also got the added bonus of seeing where the Dalek's ray now appeared to be firing from. You could also use a tab on the side of the box to wiggle the Doctor about a bit... which only served to make things worse. 

I've done an updated version which attempts to capture the magic of the original. 

(Oh, and you will notice that the word 'Easter' is NOT on the 1980s box. Neither was it on the Doctor-less Dalek egg that Suchard produced the following year. Indeed, it's never been common place to use the term 'Easter egg' on chocolate eggs. Ever. Not putting 'Easter' on chocolate egg boxes is not a new thing... Take note.)
