Some more 60s Doctor Who Toys

During the early part of the second lockdown, I put together a few more silly 60s Doctor Who toys. All of them are based on actual products. 

I love the packaging designs from that period. Not constrained by the ideals of a brand bible, they had free-reign to do what they liked. 

Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. Sometimes it was a cheap generic design. Other times it was a work of art. Nothing was ever the same. 

Here's a few of the ones I did. If you know your merchandise, you'll probably be able to spot the source material...

Chumbleymania Forever!!!

I did some Chumbley merchandise a few years ago and I regularly return to them as the subject of alternate merchandise. There were part of a regular troop of alien robots that were seen as attempts to duplicate the success of the Daleks during the early years of the series. Needless to say, like the Mechons, the War Machines and the Quarks, they failed to make much of an impact. They haven't been awarded the honour of a figurine by the Doctor Who Figurine Collection. Shame! 

Here's a few more items from an alternate universe where the Daleks were overtaken by the success of the cute little robots from Rilla.

Dr Who LPs for Worlds Records Shop Day 2019!

I see they are releasing two classic Doctor Who soundtracks on vinyl for Record Store Day this year. Well, they seem to do something like this every year now. The covers for Galaxy Four and Destiny of the Daleks are online now and look very nice and artistic... if a little bit TOO modern for my tastes. Naturally I like harkening back to the past and that rebellious, pseudo-punk cover that was produced to accompany the original release of Genesis of the Daleks by BBC Records back in 1979. 


Here's two designs what I have done that keep to the style of that original design classic...

Haynes Manuals from TV's Doctor Who...

It seems you can't do anything these days without there being a Haynes manual for doing it... 

In the world of fiction, there's ones for everything from the Millenium Falcon to Captain Scarlet's SPV... 

But no Doctor Who ones...!

Yes, there's plenty of T shirt mock-ups of covers for Dalek and TARDIS manuals but no actual books. 

At least not yet!

Since the Dalek and TARDIS ones have already been done to death, here's a selection of more obscure ones...

Early Ninth Doctor Novels For Elderly Doctor Who Fans...

In 2005, the BBC, fearing that the radical new series of Doctor Who starring TV's Christopher Eccleston as more contemporary "Northern" Time Lord would alienate elderly fans, commissioned a set of three novels depicting familiar monsters and villains from the beloved Hartnell era in brand new adventures with the ninth Doctor. 

They were never published as it was a silly idea.

The Doctor Who Woman Book - Fixed and Re-done...

I don't usually go back and redo things.

Oh alright I do. I lost many of the original Photoshop files of my early work when my old PC went down the creek a few years ago so I had to redo a number of them from scratch when I came to create postcards and populate my RedBubble shop with stuff folk can actually buy. Or not, looking at the sales figures.

However, I made a huge mistake (even by my standards) on my Doctor Who Woman Book last year by using totally the wrong version of Futura on it. I didn't notice at the time. There's a point where you make a mistake so often it starts to look right and it also affected some of my later Target Book covers. I was grateful to the lovely (and always helpful) Clayton Hickman for pointing it out but not so happy that I'd missed such a glarring error.

Anyhow, here's a revamped version of The Target Doctor Who Woman Book. The gags are the same rather desperate ones that were in the original, just the fonts have been changed to protect the dignity of the design hack behind them.

Selected Pages From The New Dr WHO Hardback - Chumbley

There's a new Doctor Who coffee table book on the way to bookshelves shortly. It's called DALEK and is about Daleks. It costs £35.*

I've seen some of the pages from it and have come to the conclusion that I want some of that so here's my attempt at a similar tome dedicated to everyone's 44th favourite Dr WHO monster/robot - the Chumbleys. 

I've called it "CHUMBLEY"

* If the price is too steep, do bear in mind that last year's similarly lavish coffee table book - The Whoniverse - is currently on the bargain table in WHSmiths for seven quid.

Even More Unreleased Doctor Who Toys...

It's been an odd Sunday for me. For once I've had bugger all to do...

Then I had a bit of inspiration. That was at around 8.45am. 

It is now 7.45pm and as well as cooking and eating a full Sunday roast, I've 're-discovered' these little treasures from more guilty times...

The Doctor Who Woman Book - (Target books/1979)

Here's something you don't see on eBay much. In fact, you don't see it at all. It's the not widely known sequel to Target's 1976 Doctor Who Monster Book. 

Women's lib was very popular in some parts of the 1970s and a book about the womans of Doctor Who seemed like a good idea at the time... 

Sadly it wasn't...
