Four Alternative Covers For The Daleks' Master Plan LP

I make no excuse that one of my favourite ancient Doctor Who serials is the epic 'The Daleks Master Plan'. The soundtrack is being released on vinyl shortly - yes, all thirteen episodes of it (including the 'Mission to the Unknown' prologue episode). The cover is lovely. Don't get me wrong. Very stylish and atmospheric.

I've done a few alternative versions of my own - including one that harkens back to the 1979 LP of 'Genesis of the Daleks'.

Dr Who LPs for Worlds Records Shop Day 2019!

I see they are releasing two classic Doctor Who soundtracks on vinyl for Record Store Day this year. Well, they seem to do something like this every year now. The covers for Galaxy Four and Destiny of the Daleks are online now and look very nice and artistic... if a little bit TOO modern for my tastes. Naturally I like harkening back to the past and that rebellious, pseudo-punk cover that was produced to accompany the original release of Genesis of the Daleks by BBC Records back in 1979.

A few unofficial 60s Doctor Who LPs...

Someone brought up the subject of Russ Conway on Twitter last week and it reminded me of the LP we had when I was a toddler. "Russ Conway's Family Favourites" on which the popular pianist hammered out renditions of such standard melodies as "Keep Right On Till The End Of The Road", "MacNamara's Band" and other 'lost' delights from a bygone era. I seem to recall a scratch on the record during "MacNamara's Band" resulting in the last few notes repeating endlessly. That's what "MacNamara's Band" means to be... 

Anyhow, here's Russ Conway's collection of Doctor Who music what he recorded and released back in the late 60s. Like everything else on this blog, it's unavailable. 

As are the other two LPs...

Dr WHO LPs for Record Store Day

It's nice that 'City of Death' and 'Tomb of the Cybermen' have been released on vinyl for Record Store Day. However, they're not really the Dr Who records of our youth. They're actually just double album releases of the CDs from a few years ago. Unedited. Back in 1979, BBC Records and Tapes released a heavily edited (but still coherent) adaptation of 'Genesis of the Daleks' narrated by Tom Baker with a cover that featured Sex Pistols-style artwork juxtaposed with a glam rock coloured version of the diamond DW logo. (Oh, for the days of fluid branding!)

Here's a selection of period style sleeves in homage of that first LP.

The 1st First Doctor Audio Adventures recalled...

With the announcement by TV's Big Finish of their brand new audio adventures of the first Dr WHO, it's a timely reminder to note that David Bradley wasn't the 1st first recast Doctor to appear in sound form. 

Following his runaway success in The Five Doctors, Richard (Blakes7) Hurndall lent his voice to this hastily released LP back in 1984. 

He never got it back.

That Incredibly Rare Follow-up to Dr WHO and the Pescatons!

Yes, it's Record Store Day again. And yet, again the classic Doctor Who LP "Dr Who and the Pescations" is being re-re-re-re-released in its traditional twelve inch format. 

I thought I might jump on the band wagon and present the rarely heard follow-up to the LP...

Three UFO Century 21 Mini-albums

The Century 21 range of mini-albums were a staple of every Gerry Anderson fans record collection in the 60s. Each release was a 33rpm EP and featured "21 minutes of adventure". Although the 21 minute tag was correct, the term 'adventure' was more loosely applied. Some were abbreviated audio adaptations of episodes of Thunderbirds whilst others saw the listener taken on tours of Marineville and NASA rocket launches courtesy of Troy Tempest and Steve Zodiac respectively. Sometimes they were even canon-blasting original adventures for Lady Penelope and Captain Scarlet. 

For some reason, Century 21 stopped producing their mini-albums following Captain Scarlet & The Mysterons. 

There are those of us who would've appreciated the range going on throughout the later Gerry Anderson productions...

Doctor Who - Power of the Daleks: Multi-platform release... sort of...

The release of the missing Doctor Who adventure Power of the Daleks in a fully animated form has been largely met with rounds of applause from Who fans everywhere. 

Initially it will be released by the BBC Store as daily downloads followed by a more traditional DVD version a fortnight or so later. But what about other formats for this classic story. I'm sure the BBC would want to make as much money from the production as possible. 

Then there's the older fans who prefer their Doctor Who in more vintage formats. And with covers that would fit more uniformly into existing collections.

I've spent the last few days put together a portfolio of covers for such releases. 

None of these will be available to buy because the BBC is an up-to-date, with-it content provider and has little time for ancient methods of communication and storage.

Space: 1999 mini-albums - 21 Minutes of Moon Madness!

I haven't done any mini-albums for a while but I was reminded of the final four that the failing company (which had been sold off to K-Tel) released in the mid-seventies. 

They were based on the popular Space: 1999 and featured specially recorded performances by the three main stars - Martin Landau, Barbara Bain and the other one. 

Sadly the entire range was swiftly withdrawn from sale shortly after their release following complaints from parents about the John Koenig one. Can't think why... 

They occasionally turn up in charity shops but not as records.
