New Annuals for 2021

As has been custom for the past few years, I've done some annuals for the forthcoming festive season. Having in the past based several on old Doctor Who annuals, this year I've opted to use more recent ones as the inspiration. Most of these are either ones for Peter Capaldi or Jodie Whittaker. 

The choice of subjects has been a little more difficult than usual given the dearth of new content from the main TV channels. As such, there's a little bit of repetition in this year's subject matter - with a gentle nod to the current national situation. 

I hope you like them. You don't have to work out which annuals are from which year...

Two Mandrel Annuals and a Giant Robot One...

I did a cover for a Mandrel annual some time ago. It was based on the 1979 Dalek annual but replacing the Daleks in the original artwork with Mandrels. When I retweeted it as a "Goodbye Twitter" tweet, I received a lot of positive comments about it including suggestions that I add it to the designs for journals that I have on RedBubble. I'll admit that the whole concept it amusing but I wasn't too happy with it as it used a lot of the artwork from the genuine cover. I'm never happy when I'm bastardising other artist's work - however old. Despite, I decided to follow the suggestions and add it to the RedBubble portfolio. 

Alas, I discovered that the original PS files for it had gone the way of several months worth of work when my PC died in late 2019. I should've left it at that but I decided to redo it anyway. I also did a version of the original annual's back cover too. Earlier RedBubble journal designs feature a textless version of the cover art on the back. In my silly head, I thought the extra effort would redeem my use of the original artwork on the cover. 

So taken with the design, I decided to do another couple of annual covers - another Mandrel one (based on the 1976 Dalek annual) and a K-1 - Giant Robot annual (based on the 1983 K-9 annual). Although copies of the original designs, these are original photo-montages and don't use any of the originals' artwork. I even did another back cover for the K-1 annual.

Old Doctors, New Annuals...

Here's a selection of new annual covers using the classic Doctors. Each of the covers is based on the design for that year. 

I did this as a belated follow-up to the popular thirteenth Doctor on classic annuals that I did a few years ago. The link to them is here. 

Surprisingly, I haven't received any trolling from the so-called 'NotMyDoctor' faction this time.

More Spin-off Annuals For Dr Who...

With my own convention season over, I can now get back to updating the blog.

60s Spin-off Annuals For Dr Who Companions

The 2020 annuals are about to filter their way onto the shelves of WHSmith so now seems as good a time as any to do a few more covers for annuals that could've been.

Here's a selection of spin-off annuals for some of Dr Who's companions from the 1960s - done in a period style.

This year's TV annuals - now unavailable!

Well, after a plea for suggestions on the Twitter, here's this year's selection of annuals based on current TV shows. 

I had over a hundred replies. A lot of them repeated the same ones and some included old TV shows despite my request for current ones to get the treatment. (THREE requests for Howards Way!!!). 

Obviously not used all of them. Not because they aren't good ideas in themselves but I also have to take into account the availability of images and also how amusing the final product will look. 

Particularly pleased with the Very English Scandal and Countryfile ones. The former shows that you can take a selection of images from any TV show and completely change the concept of the show with the right (or wrong!) branding. The Countryfile one is, though I say so myself, a nice piece of work but that's only because it looks so much like the original Brilliant Book of Doctor Who. And the title "Countryfile" can easily be made to fit the "Doctor DW Who" logo of recent years. Not many show's titles could do that. 

Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to reply. I'm sorry but I can't return any but there isn't a prize for all those that I show.

Jodie Whittaker on Old Doctor Who annuals

Well, the new trailer for the Doctor Who new series has debuted at SDCC and on line... and well, it looks good doesn't it? 

Fired by the freshness and enthusiasm of the thirty second clip show, I've gone back and re-purposed some of the old familiar Doctor Who annuals of old. (including the 1978 one which I've struggled with over the years, trying to find some way of doing it justice.) All this despite the fact there's still only around six or seven official pictures of Jodie Whittaker and the cast to play around with...
