Doctor Who - Season 22 on Target

Confession time: I don't like 'Revelation of the Daleks'. I feel that 'Vengeance on Varos' is by far the best story from season 22 - imaginative and different, it plays with the television format and just about riffs on its post modern themes. 'Revelation' on the other hand gives the Doctor a passive observer's role and one wonders if his presence is actually a hinderance to the plot. The colourful characters that writer Eric Saward weaves through a storyline of betrayal, dark secrets and intrigue are far more interesting to watch than the Doctor. His multi-coloured coat seems more like a beacon now to remind us he's still there. Which is sad really as by this point I'd grown to like Colin Baker's portrayal. 

Ah well, never mind. It'll be back next year anyway... won't it?

Doctor Who - Season 21 on Target

Here's season twenty-one. I remember enjoying this season. A vast improvement on the previous two and Peter seemed to be getting into his stride. Sadly, the writing was on the wall. Dreadful irony that his final story proved to be one of the greatest Doctor Who adventures of all time...

(BTW - the change of style for the final story of season 21 is a deliberate artistic decision that is sadly not followed up with the following season.)

The Trial of the Time Lord original 70s Target book covers...

This seems to be a bit of a habit now - producing new Target book covers for Doctor Who seasons as they are announced as brand spanking new blu-ray sets. 

The much lamented Trial of the Time Lord season was officially named as the next box set a few weeks back and (luckily) I had a few ideas up my sleeve for this short season from 1986. I thought my original 70s Target designs for some of Jodie Whittaker's episodes worked quite well so I went back to those early works of art for this little set.

Proper Target-style Covers For Those Two Eric Saward Dalek Novels...

I think it's safe to say that the covers for Eric Saward's novelisations of his two classic Doctor Who serials have not exactly been popular with their potential market. 

I had avoided doing some alternative covers for them as there are some very good ones on the net already. But since I had the templates out and I'd had loads of requests (well, two anyway!) to do some, I knocked these up over an evening last week. 

They are done in the style of Target books from around the period that the original stories were transmitted in the mid-eighties.

Rubbish Publicity Shots Used On Doctor Who Book Covers...

The title of this post says it all really - though it's a bit clunky. 

During JNT's time on Doctor Who, there was a rash of these sort of publicity stills - usually the Doctor, his companion and a guest star doing high kicks with a prop (a birthday cake?). Unsurprisingly, none of these tended to go much further than the following day's newspaper or the front cover of a 90s Official Doctor Who Magazine cover. 

Over the past few months, I've filled in time using some of them to create some ghastly book covers that - for me - sum up the ever-so-slightly camp Art of the Doctor Who Publicity Stunt! 

(You've probably seen the Silver Nemesis one before... but what the heck..)

Some Doctor Who Jigsaws c1984

When Colin Baker took over TV's Dr Who back in 1984, he appeared in a complete story at the end of the 21st season. 

In their haste to produce some up-to-date new merchandise, the BBC Enterprise licenced a jigsaw company to produce a set of five jigsaws - such had been the success of some that were produced featuring a cardboard cut-out of Peter Davison being menaced by his enemies a few years earlier...

Sadly, their lack of available visual material was quite apparent when the samples turned up on producer John Nathan Turner's. 

The jigsaws remained boxed and unmade...

Classic Doctor Who novels re-branding - the sixth Doctor

Onto Colin Baker's tenure as the Doctor... I had a bit of fun with these - not that I didn't with the previous five incarnations. Not least with the logo. Yes, it's the same as the ones for the fifth Doctor adventures but, like the production team at the time, I couldn't resist fiddling with it a bit. So much so, that you wouldn't even notice if I hadn't told you...
